What Horsepower Opener Do You Actually Need?
Sizing by Door Type
Single steel door
1/2–3/4 HP DC belt is quiet and plenty for standard single doors. Belt drive systems are ideal for attached garages.
Double insulated/carriage doors
3/4 HP DC or higher torque recommended. Insulated doors are heavier and require more lifting force, especially in cold weather.
Heavy custom/wood doors
1-1/4 HP equivalent with reinforced rail. Custom wood doors can weigh 400+ pounds and need serious lifting power.
Features That Matter in Minnesota
- Battery backup for storm outages when you need to get out
- Wi-Fi control for remote operation and monitoring
- Bright LEDs for dark Minnesota winter afternoons
- Cold-rated rails/lubes that won't seize up in sub-zero weather
Pro Tip
"Weak opener" complaints are often door balance problems. Fix the door balance first, then dial opener limits correctly. A properly balanced door should stay put when lifted halfway manually.
Our opener installation service includes proper sizing based on your door weight and usage patterns, not just guesswork.
